Founded to preserve, interpret, and present the history of transportation and its profound influence on commerce, industry, defense, and daily life, The National Museum of Transportation houses one of the nation’s most comprehensive and historically significant collections. The Museum’s holdings span rail, aviation, automotive, and maritime history, illustrating technological innovation and the evolution of mobility in the United States.

Among the Museum’s most notable artifacts is the F/A-18 E1 Super Hornet, the first Super Hornet ever constructed, representing a milestone in modern military aviation and American aerospace engineering. The collection also includes the Chrysler Turbine Car, one of only three fully operational turbine-powered automobiles in existence, emblematic of mid-20th-century experimentation and innovation in automotive design.
Additional highlights include a C-47 transport aircraft that carried troops and vital supplies during World War II, underscoring the critical role of transportation in global conflict and victory, and Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4006, one of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built, symbolizing the strength and scale of American railroading and its impact on national expansion and industrial growth.
“It is truly an honor to be nominated in a class of such distinguished museums,” said Terri McEachern, Executive Director of The National Museum of Transportation. “This recognition affirms the national significance of our collection and the Museum’s mission to preserve these irreplaceable artifacts so future generations may understand the pivotal role transportation has played in shaping our nation.”
Voting in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards is open for a limited time, and supporters are encouraged to vote daily to help The National Museum of Transportation earn the distinction of Best Open-Air Museum.
