Having a baby will always be one of life’s most beautiful blessings. But when it comes to being a parent, a lot of pressure can be placed on parenting. As a new mom, how do you know if you’re doing it right? And how do you find what works for you? In this post, we are going to explore how you can find your own approach to parenting and block out the rest!
1. Know Yourself
First of all, it’s important to focus on yourself. As with many things in life, there can be a lot of noise going on around you. There are so many different opinions, ideas, and approaches that you could look to take. But rather than feeling overwhelmed, it’s really important to go back to basics and know yourself better. When you know what you want and how you would like family life to go, you can then start to focus on what it will look like to build that out.
2. Read and Research
If you are brand new to the idea of parenting and you’re the first person you know to have children, you may be completely green. Even when everyone around you has had kids, you may not really know what matters to you. So this is where reading and researching can come in handy. There are so many great books and podcasts that you can turn to to help you. However, try not to overload yourself! The last thing you want is to take in too much information, so choose your resources wisely!
3. Choose Your Parenting Style
One thing that you might like to do is take a look at the different categories of parenting styles. Not everyone will choose one, and many people may use a blend of a few, but getting to know the general types of parenting styles might help you to work out what your general approach will be here. The type itself is often less important than you finding something that feels right for your family and how you wish to raise your children.
4. Educate Yourself on Key Topics
Alongside this, you will also find that educating yourself on key child-related topics is essential. You can do this while you’re pregnant or as you go through the milestones. But focusing on everything from feeding to sleeping to development can help. Here, you will find this TOG Chart: What Is TOG & How To Dress Your Baby for Sleep article useful for preparing for sleep. You can also make sure that you’re boosting your knowledge on approaches to nutrition, speech, and so much more!
5. Cut Out the Noise
However, it is hard not to acknowledge the amount of noise that may start to come your way as soon as you announce that you’re pregnant. You may even find that a lot of it is unsolicited. So rather than letting everyone talk to you about their opinions and approaches, do your best to stay in your lane! The same goes for what you consume on things like social media too!
6. Be Kind to Yourself
At the same time, you really need to make sure that you’re being kind to yourself here. You’re brand new at this, everyone is at some point. So you can expect yourself to know everything, be an expert, or get it right straight away. Everything takes time and you may not feel as if you know what you’re doing, but you will find a rhythm. When your baby arrives, just let yourself adjust and work your way up to what feels right for you.
7. Set Boundaries and Don’t Be Afraid to Reinforce Them
However, along with taking it easy and one step at a time, you may also want to make sure that you’re setting boundaries and reinforcing them. As a new parent, you may be bombarded with thoughts, opinions, and ideas that don’t always align with your own. You may even feel as if you have things forced on you a little. This is why setting new boundaries as a parent is vital. That way, you can prevent yourself from being overpowered and stand your ground, which then enables you to do things in the ways that are right for you.
8. Choose Your Support Network Carefully
As a new mom, you may find that loneliness starts to creep in at some point. However, it doesn’t have to last. You really need to make sure that you have a great community around you as soon as you can. If you have friends and family nearby, this will always be a great help. If you don’t, looking to find your tribe of people will make a huge difference. Having new mom friends that think the same way you do can help you to feel supported along your journey as a new mom.
9. Let Yourself Learn (and Fail!) Along the Way
One thing that is important to bear in mind is that you may not find things easy all of the time. In fact, expect to feel overwhelmed at least a handful of times! But this is all brand new to you and you aren’t expected to know the answers right away. Instead, you may find that you’re going to learn a lot really quickly. And even when it feels like you’re failing at times, you’re just finding your feet! So, make sure that you reposition it in your mind and let yourself learn along the way.
10. Trust That it’s a Process (And Still Do it Your Way!)
Ultimately, becoming a parent is always going to be a process. After all, you are taking on something that is brand new to you and it is often said to be the hardest but best thing you will ever do! Of course, it is going to be a process that you need to learn and adjust to! But at the same time, you also need to make sure that you’re still doing things your way. When you do, you’ll feel a lot happier with how you’re parenting and be able to fully immerse yourself in the experience, rather than being pulled in every other direction by unwanted opinions and interference!
