Let’s take a look at some standard grooming habits that may be doing your hair more harm than good.

Keeping It Long

Some men think they can overcompensate for their bald spot by growing our the rest of their hair. As if that will somehow distract people from what’s really going on. In reality, the opposite is true. Growing sections of your hair longer will at worst, accentuate your hair loss and at best, make your hair look uneven. It’s best for you to keep your hair short, which will help you hide the thinner areas.

Being Too Precious

Often when men think they’re in danger of losing their hair, they will become overly protective about the hair they have. Similar to not wanting their hair cut, some men will even refuse to wash their hair; thinking that any sort of vigorous interaction will cause more to fall out. This is not actually true, and in fact keeping your hair clean is one of the best things you can do to ensure its health. However, drying your hair with a towel may cause some weaker hairs to fall out. So it may be best to let it air-dry.

Too Much Product

Only ⅓ of men regularly use products in their hair. But those that do can often be found using the wrong ones. If you are using product, make sure you’re avoiding harsh ingredients like polyethylene glycol which can make your hair brittle, and alcohol which can cause your hair to dry out and die. Try using all-natural products, or lighter mouses that will give your hair some life.

Hat Wearing

This may not be technically a grooming tip, but wearing a hat excessively can indirectly lead to hair loss. Wearing a hat while exercising or playing sports will, over time, cause sweat to build up and soak in to the band of the hat. This can cause irritation to the scalp and eventually lead to hair falling out. Also excessive hat wearing can cause unwanted friction with your scalp which can also cause your weaker hairs to jump ship.

This post is a collaborative effort by St. Louis Dad.

The worst part about losing your hair is that it happens slowly.
