It’s a new year and I already have an amazing product for you to spend those gift cards on. 1byOne reached out asking if I would be interesting in testing out some of their products and writing up a review for them in exchange to keep the product. I thought, “why not” and was sent over this amazing little speaker.
This particular speaker is very rugged and is loud. It features Bluetooth connectivity or you can insert a micro SD card filled with some audio and listen that way. Another really cool feature about this speaker is that it is also waterproof. It doesn’t float, so don’t through it in the ocean expecting to get it back, but it can sit out on a boat, the beach, a pool, or even in the shower. I had the kids try it out in the bath and played some silly bath songs while they washed up. The speaker worked just as expected and the kids loved it.
I mentioned that the speaker is very rugged. That’s a good thing to have when your son wants to run around the house holding the speaker and drops it occasionally. I am not exactly sure what the drop point would be for the speaker or how much of a beating it can take but I will say it has stood up against my toddler very well.
After unboxing the speaker I turned it on without even needing to charge it beforehand. I thought that was really cool. Your mileage may vary when it comes to the charge when the device is shipped but in my own experience it was ready to rock and roll right out of the box. The packaging was really nice. I was greeted with a nice “hello!” when I opened the box. I immediately replied with “it’s me”, but that’s besides the point. The speaker comes with a USB cable so you can charge it. There is also a manual but the device is pretty self explanatory when you use it.
The run down on how you use the device is pretty simple. You hold the power button for a few seconds and a pleasant voice will tell you that the device is on and waiting for a Bluetooth connection. Once you have made a connection the voice will let you know and you can start playing audio through the speaker. Your volume controls on your phone will increase or decrease the volume on the speaker. You can also skip, stop, and pause on the speaker. I also forgot to mention that it even has a built in microphone so you can use this speaker as a speaker phone if needed! How cool is that!
I only have two complaints about the speaker. They are minor and more so feature requests for the next model. The first feature request would be to add an FM/AM tuner. Listening via Bluetooth or SD card is cool, but having the local radio would be even cooler. It’s okay that this doesn’t have a radio as most stations have apps now. Which you could then just Bluetooth on over to the speaker, but whatever the speaker is still cool.
The second feature request is something I think would be sort of easy to do. When you open the flap to charge or insert a SD card you can see the blue light indicating that the speaker is on. But with that flap closed you can’t see that light. I personally would like to be able to see that light as an indication that the speaker is on. I mean if that light is there why not show it. It’s not that big of a deal though because the voice was a very nice surprised the first time I heard it, and I think it’s cool each additional time I hear the voice telling me that it is “Powering on”.
So with Bluetooth, waterproof, rugged, the microphone, and of course the great sound coming out of the speaker I will definitely have to give this speaker two big thumbs up. If you are in the market for a speaker like this, don’t pass it up. I have been jamming out with it for several days now and I still have not had to charge the battery. I am just so impressed with this speaker. Great work 1byOne on this device.
